B1002 Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures
This course is an introductory course in the Hebrew Scriptures. Students will read representative sections of each book of the Hebrew Bible and become familiar with the relevant critical issues and debates. Students will be introduced to the basic tenets of biblical exegesis.
About this course
By the end of this course, successful students will have read representative sections of each book of the Hebrew Bible, studied the critical issues surrounding these books, and be able to discuss their place within the biblical traditions. This will include knowledge of the documentary hypothesis and the Deuteronomistic history, as well as a basic understanding of the historical events underlying the biblical accounts. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on how these learnings might influence their area of ministry in the Awakening.
What you'll learn
- Classes will be a mixture of lecture and discussion,
- occasional in-class small group work.
- While much new material will be presented by the instructor, all students are expected to contribute their knowledge, experience, and insights.
- Students will conduct some individual research outside of class.
